Issue Details

My code uses NI-DMM VIs and throws error -1074118066. What can I do?
I also get the same error message when running a test panel from NI MAX for my DMM device.

The error message lists the following:

Error -1074118066 Internal HW Error Contact National Instruments.

It could show the error -1074118090 as well with the same description.

Solution

This error could be due to the configured input range. Follow these steps confirm if this is the cause of the issue

  1. Check if your input voltage at the DMM does not exceed the range configured at the niDMM Config Measurement VI or Configuring Auto Range by using e.g. an oscilloscope. Even peaks are critical.
  2. If the input voltage exceeds the range please use a larger range so all measurements including all peaks are in range.
  3. Now reset your DMM in NI MAX and reboot the system.
Additional Troubleshooting steps to try:
  1. Reset the DMM card from NI MAX
  2. Reset the NI Max Database, as shown here: How to Fix or Reset the NI Measurement and Automation Explorer Database File
  3. Try the card in a different slot, or chassis (if available)
  4. Try using another similar card if there is one available
  5. Uninstall the DMM driver and re-install it, or try installing a newer version of the DMM driver
If after performing the all of the above troubleshooting steps, the error is still there, then it may be the case that the hardware is defective and it requires a repair. In this case, please contact National Instruments .

Additional Information

The error message is reporting that the DMM entered an error mode because there was a signal detected on an input pin higher or lower than the configured input range. This is a safety feature to protect the DMM from damage.

If you need to use a specific range for your DMM to ensure a certain accuracy, apply a low pass filter to your setup.
