How to Put a Larger SD Card in my NI CompactRIO or sbRIO Device

Updated May 17, 2021

  • CompactRIO Controller
  • CompactRIO Single-Board Controller

  • I have an sbRIO or cRIO which only officially supports SD cards with a capacity of up to 32 GB. I want to swap in a larger SD card - will this work?

cRIOs and sbRIOs will generally support SD cards that use the SD or SDHC standard. The maximum capacity of an SD card using the SDHC standard is capped at 32GB (SD is capped at 2GB).

You can see a list of SD cards provided by NI here.

Additional Information

While it is technically possible to use a higher capacity SD card that uses either the SDXC or SDUC Standards, this requires extensive Linux knowledge and additional Microsoft licensing as SDCX and SDUC relies on a proprietary Microsoft file system. Since this is not something National Instruments will be able to support, it is highly recommended to use a supported SD card.
