General Communication Failure When Installing Software to CompactRIO

Issue Details

When I try to install software to my CompactRIO it fails during the installation process and shows the message:
“General failure when communicating with the remote device”.

I can see my controller in NI MAX and its status shows up as running. How can I resolve this error?


  • If you are connecting to your cRIO through an Ethernet cable, try using a USB cable.
  • Format your cRIO and reinstall software

Additional Information

If the USB cable allows installing software, you should check the network configuration of your controller and make sure it is on the same subnet as the PC it is connected to.
