Error 1406 During Installation of Any NI Product

Updated Dec 14, 2018

Issue Details

When I run the installation for LabVIEW (or any NI software product) I see an error dialog box with following message:
Error 1406: Could not write value 'name_of_value'. Verify that you have sufficient access to that key.
What is causing this, and how can I correct it?

Solution

If you are using Windows Vista, the problem can be caused by the User Access Control (UAC).  Disabling the UAC from Windows Control Panel before installing the NI product will allow proper access, eliminating the error.
If you are using Windows XP or older, this problem is related to a limitation in the Windows Registry size (either specific key size or total size of the registry on disk)
Microsoft is aware of this and has fixed any issues by releasing a patch. Upgrading from Windows Installer 1.0 or 1.2 to Windows Installer 2.0 should fix this issue. Please refer to the link to this Microsoft Knowledgebase in the Related Links section below.
After installing this update, if you still see the error, it may be that the registry is full. Many times registries get full with keys that are no longer used and may be safely deleted. DO NOT DELETE anything that you do not FULLY understand its purpose and use. The registry is very important to the operation of Windows and should be handled carefully. If you think this may apply to you, there are a number of freeware and shareware registry cleaners available on the internet.
Another possible reason is that the key that the installer is trying to enter is too long. A possible cause is an extremely long path name. You could try to install to a simpler, shorter directory or path.
If you are using Windows 2000 you can increase the registry using the following steps:

  1. Right click on My Computer
  2. Select Properties
  3. Select Advanced in the Properties window
  4. Click Performance Options
  5. In the Performance Options window, click Change
  6. Increase the maximum registry size
And according to the link about windows installer, it updates to 4.0 and later visions to solve this problems in windows 7 and later operating systems.
