Unable to Assign a License to a Group in NI VLM

Issue Details

I have a Volume License Agreement (VLA) with a license file that is running in an NI Volume License Manager (VLM) server. I'm creating a User/Computer group in the Groups tab. When I click on Add button next to the License section, I don't see any licenses available as shown below.

Why is this happening?

Solution

This behavior typically occurs when your agreement uses an Unmanaged (Concurrent) license or if you're trying to create a license group under the wrong license type.

Unmanaged licenses:

  • Are not tied to specific users or computers
  • Do not require permission assignment in VLM
  • Allow any client machine to check out a license as long as it can connect to the server

VLM does not allow these licenses to be assigned to groups, so they will not appear in the Add License list. This is expected behavior and not an error.

To create a license group, you must have a license that matches the selected license type. For example, if you attempt to create a User Group but only have computer‑based licenses, the License Name field will appear empty.

Additional Information

If you need to assign license permissions to a specific group of clients, you may need to consider changing the license type to a model that supports group‑based assignment, such as:

  • Named‑User (Non‑Concurrent) License
  • Computer‑Based (Non‑Concurrent) License
  • Managed Concurrent License

These license types support permission‑based assignment within Volume License Manager (VLM). To request a license type change, you can send an email to services@ni.com outlining the required modifications.
