I cannot access my network licenses running on NI VLM and need to understand why. I have been told there is an error log file but do not know how to use it.

When you cannot access your licenses running on NI VLM and have performed all the steps in this knowledgebase article , analyzing the error log file will help you understanding what is happening:
  • On the client computer, try opening your NI software which is unable to access the network license and note the time
  • Locate the lmgrd.log error log file: Finding Important Troubleshooting Files for Volume Licensing Issues
  • Open the file using any text file utility like notepad
  • Locate the time when you have tried to open your software and find the line starting with "DENIED". This should be followed with the software package you have tried to access and the denial reason. Here is an example:

 
  • The client computer will request the license from any available sources without regard to its access. This will sometimes lead to multiple "DENIED" entries before an "OUT" entry for the same piece of software.

Additional Information

Denial reasons will be for example:
  • Licensed number of users already reached
  • All licenses reserved for others
  • User/host not on INCLUDE list for feature
