Issue Details

I am trying to connect to a third-party instrument in NI Measurement & Automation Explorer (NI MAX). This device requires an IP address and a port number. How can I connect to this device and communicate with it?

  1. Download the NI-VISA driver, which provides the programming interface between the third-party instrument and NI software.
  2. Open NI MAX and expand Devices and Interfaces.
  3. Right-click on Network Devices and select the Create New VISA TCP/IP Resource... option. You should now see the below three options:
  1. Select Manual Entry of Raw Socket and enter an IP address and port number.
  2. Once you have finished inputting the required information for your particular instrument, you should then have a new VISA TCP/IP Resource added in MAX. You can now use the Communicate with Instrument tool to test communication with your device.

Additional Information

Before attempting to create a new VISA TCP/IP Resource make sure that your instrument is connected to your network, you should be able to "ping" your device.
