Issue Details

I've recently upgraded from an older version of LabVIEW to the newest LabVIEW version.  Most of my code works great in the new version of LabVIEW, but certain VI's cannot be opened.  When attempting to open them I see the following message:

Compiler Error.  Report this problem to National Instruments Tech Support.  out of memory exception caught in llvm gencode

Why is it that my VI's cannot be opened?

Solution

This error occurs when LabVIEW tries to compile a VI with a very large block diagram.  Consider modularizing your code by placing code for specific tasks into subVI's.  Also try to minimize stacked sequence structures or case structures with a large number of cases.

Additional Information

This exception is most likely to be thrown when upgrading to LabVIEW 2010 or newer from an earlier version.  This is because the LabVIEW compiler underwent large changes in LabVIEW 2010 which use more of the memory available to LabVIEW.
