Issue Details

My PXI/PXIe controller would no longer boot to Windows, displaying a blue screen of death with the title "UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME".

I have tried:
  • Booting to safe mode: Gets same blue screen
  • Pulling all PXI cards from chassis did not change anything
  • By entering recovery mode, the OS hangs and I see a black screen with moveable mouse cursor
I would like to know if there is any possibility of restoring the device while preserving the data on the hard drive.

Solution

One possibility is to try to boot the system using a USB with a Windows (or other OS) image by Creating a Bootable USB Drive for a PXI Controller.

If the previous step does not work, you would need to Restore the Operating System of PXI, VXI, cRIO-908x, and cDAQ-913x Controllers, but this will set the controller to factory settings.

Additional Information

Some troubleshooting steps to isolate this issue are
  • Test another chassis
  • Test with another controller
  • Switch the hard drive of the controlle
