Test Panels Not Available in NI Measurement and Automation Explorer

Issue Details

  • I have an application where I am acquiring data from a National Instruments DAQ card. I have built a stand-alone executable and created an installer for it on my development machine. When I install the application on a second machine, it works as expected. However, when I go into NI Measurement and Automation Explorer (MAX) and click on the device, I cannot find the Test Panels option. I am expecting the button to be available as shown in the image below. Why is it not here? 
  • I am using NI MAX to access my card, instrument or communication port and interacting with LabVIEW, and I am missing the Open VISA Test Panel button. I am expecting this button to appear as shown in the image below:

Solution

For DAQ devices:

If you are using a DAQ card and are missing the Test Panels option, please make sure you have NI-DAQmx MAX Configuration Support. You can verify this by opening NI-MAX and on the left-hand side panel click to expand My System»Software. Under the Software drop down, you should see the NI-DAQmx MAX Configuration as highlighted in the image below.
 
 
 
If you do not have NI-DAQmx Configuration, you will need to install it. You can install the NI-DAQmx MAX Configuration Support from the NI-DAQmx installer page.
Notes:
  • Remember to reboot the computer after installing or reinstalling NI-DAQmx with MAX Configuration Support.
  • The runtime version of the DAQmx driver will not contain the MAX Configuration Support.
 

For VISA Instruments and Ports:

If you are using a serial instrument, or communication port and you are missing the Open VISA Test Panel option, please make sure you have NI-VISA. You can verify this by opening NI-MAX and on the left-hand side panel click to expand My System»Software. Under the Software drop down, you should see the NI-VISA as highlighted in the image below.
 
 
 
In order to view Test Panels you must also have VISA Interactive Control installed on your PC. When installing NI-VISA you must ensure NI-VISA Interactive Control has been selected when selecting 'Additional items you may wish to install' as seen below:
 
 

Therefore if you are unable to see Test Panels, then it is advisable to uninstall NI-VISA, then reinstall and ensure that NI-VISA Interactive Control is selected. This should then enable you to access Test Panels for you device.

If you do not have NI-VISA under the Software tab, reinstall NI-VISA from the NI-VISA installer page.
 
Note: The runtime version of the VISA driver will not contain the VISA Test Panels. Additionally, to enable VISA test panels that are installed with an executable installer, create a Batch Installer that contains the appropriate full version of the VISA driver. 

Additional Information

When creating an installer for a deployment machine, the default setting is to add the run-times used in the current application. This setting can be found by going to the My Installer Properties window and navigating to Additional Installers»National Instruments Installers to Include. For your example, the runtimes you might see selected are NI LabVIEW Runtime and NI-DAQmx Runtime.

In order to see the Test Panels in NI MAX, you would need to modify the installer settings to also include MAX Configuration Support. You can do this by first unchecking the Automatically select recommended installers checkbox in order to replace the NI-DAQmx Runtime with NI-DAQmx Runtime with Configuration Support. After applying the new installer on the deployment machine, Test Panels will be available.
