Adding Users to TestStand Deployment

I would like to manage users on a TestStand deployment machine. However, it seems that the interface is only available with a development license. Is there a way to manage the users without installing a development license?


In general, there is not a quick way to do this. If you want to do this, there are three possible ways:
  1. The users come from the Users.ini file that is installed when you install the TestStand deployment file. You can change that user rights on a development computer, rebuild the deployment, and reinstall this deployment onto the deployment computer.
  2. The Users.ini file is located by default in C:\ProgramData\National Instruments\TestStand 2010\Cfg. You can generate a new Users.ini file from a development computer and replace the Users.ini file on the deployment side.
  3. If you need a more automated method, a LabVIEW program could be made that automatically edits the Users.ini file accordingly.

Additional Information

In general, the Users functionality is meant to intuitively show a user what functionality they are expected to utilize, not to be a high-security solution. According to the TestStand Help Document, "The TestStand User Manager is designed to help you implement policies and procedures concerning the use of the test station. It is not a security system and it does not inhibit or control the operating system or third-party applications. You must use the system-level security features available with the operating system to secure the test station computer against unauthorized use."

Because of this, it may make more sense to make a single operator account and give the password to any operators, and take care of security concerns at the Windows level.
