View Sequence Files on a Machine Without TestStand Installed

NI makes it possible to read TestStand sequences in the TestStand Sequence File Viewer, which is available for free download on NI Labs as a part of the NI TestStand Toolkit for Large Application Development. This tutorial shows you how to prepare your sequence file and use the Sequence File Viewer to view the file without TestStand installed. 

Note: To edit a sequence file, you must have TestStand installed.

Install TestStand Sequence File Viewer

  1. Download TestStand Sequence File Viewer on the machine without TestStand installed.
  2. Unzip the zip file.
  3. Launch the setup.exe installer and follow the prompts to install the application.


Save the Sequence File as XML File

To view the sequence file in Sequence File Viewer, it must be saved in TestStand 4.0, 4.1, 4.2, 2010, 2010SP1, 2012, 2012SP1, 2013, or 2014 XML format. Follow the steps below on a machine with TestStand installed.
  1. In the TestStand Sequence Editor, navigate to Edit >> Sequence File Properties…
  1. In the General tab, select XML (most readable, largest) from the File Format drop-down list.

  1. Click OK.
  2. Navigate to File >> Save As.
  1. Select TestStand 2014 from the Files of Type: drop-down list. TestStand 4.0, 4.1, 4.2, 2010, 2010SP1, 2012, 2012SP1, or 2013 are also valid options you can select.
  1. Click Save.


View XML File in Sequence File Viewer

  1. Launch the Sequence File Viewer application from the Start Menu.
  2. Click on Browse…
  3. Select the sequence file you previously saved.
  4. The Sequence File Viewer loads the file for viewing.

Set XML as Default File Format

You also may want to set XML as the default file format for new sequence files. 
  1. In the TestStand Sequence Editor, navigate to Configure >> Station Options…
  2. In the File tab, click the File Format Options... button.
