Issue Details

What encoder should I use with the NEMA 17 stepper motors sold by National Instruments?

Solution

The recommended encoders for the NEMA 17 CT family is the HEDS-55xx family from Avago (Agilent).

You can find these encoders at this Avago Compatibility HEDS-5XXX page.

Additional Information

The US Digital HEDS-55xx part number follows the format:
E2 - Resolution - Shaft Diameter - Outputs - Through Hole - Mounting Type - B

To be compatible with the NEMA 17 motor, the US Digital part number will need to follow the format below, where the XX values can be any of the options listed on US Digital's webpage.
E2 - XX - 14 - XX - XX - D - B

Note: You are able to select any available value for the Resolution, Outputs, and Through Hole, as represented by the XX's above.
