Hardware Not Detected in NI MAX After Upgrading Windows Version

Issue Details

After upgrading my operating system to Windows 8, 8.1, 10, or 11, my NI devices are no longer detected in NI Measurement and Automation Explorer (MAX) and/or Windows Device Manager. 

Solution

The most common causes of hardware detection issues after Windows has been upgraded are related to incompatible drivers and/or new Windows features that may affect our hardware detection. The following troubleshooting steps are recommended to mitigate these type of issues:
 
  1. Make sure you have a compatible driver installed by checking the following compatibility documents.
 
  1. Disable Fast Startup. The Fast Startup feature can be found in the Power Options by following the Control Panel navigation paths below based on your OS version:
Windows 10 or 11:
  • Navigate to Control Panel\Hardware and Sound\Power Options
    • Power Options may also show up directly in Control Panel at Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Power Options
  • Select Choose what the power buttons do. Scroll down to Shutdown settings and uncheck Turn on fast startup.
Windows 8 or 8.1:
  • Enter Power Options in search.
  • Select Choose what the power buttons do. Scroll down to Shutdown settings and uncheck Turn on fast startup
 
  1. Disable Fast Startup Group Policy. This policy enables Fast Startup regardless of the local setting.
    1. Enter Edit group policy in search. 
    2. Navigate to Computer Configuration >> Administrative Templates >> System >> Shutdown
    3. Right-click on Require use of fast startup and click Edit.
    4. Set to Disabled or Not Configured.
If you are unable to disable this group policy, contact your administrator.
 
  1. If you choose to keep Fast Startup, explicitly perform a restart so your system can detect the changes. The Windows Restart operation bypasses Fast Startup, which is different than shutting down and booting up with the Fast Startup feature enabled.
 
  1. Uninstall Endpoint Security and install a different VPN client.
 
 

Additional Information

If the issue occurs with a PCIe card, also make sure you test different PCIe ports of the PC. The PCIe cards that NI provides are compatible with x1,x4,x8, x16 PCIe Ports (you can check the specifications of your device to confirm this in the Bus Interface section). There are cases where the PCIe cards work only in one of these ports depending on the motherboard.
