Other

Third-party passive DisplayPort-to-DVI or Mini DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapters

Issue Details

  • I purchased a third-party Mini DisplayPort-to-DVI or to -HDMI adapter that I used to connect a monitor to my cRIO or cDAQ Controller. My device appears to boot properly but I do not see any output on my monitor.
  • My cRIO or Embedded cDAQ is not showing anything on the screen. The Power LED shows the device active, and the Status LED doesn't show an error. Nevertheless, when I plug in my monitor, no image shows up.
  • I'm using a third-party Mini DisplayPort-toVGA cable. When I disconnect the monitor from the cRIO, I am not able to re-establish a connection with the mointor without restarting the cRIO.

Solution

  1. The cDAQ and cRIO controllers that have integrated Mini DisplayPort only support Active DVI adapters, VGA adapters and native DisplayPort adapters that are sold by NI.

Below is a list of officially supported Mini DisplayPort adapters:

AccessoryNI Part Number
Mini DisplayPort (Male) to DisplayPort (Male), 0.5m157232-0R5
Mini DisplayPort (Male) to DisplayPort (Male), 1.0m157232-01
Mini DisplayPort (Male) to DisplayPort (Male), 2.0m157232-02
Mini DisplayPort (Male) to DVI (Female), 0.5m157231-0R5
Mini DisplayPort (Male) to VGA (Female), 0.5m157230-0R5

Additional Information

This scenario can arise with third-party adapters. In particular, third-party passive DVI and HDMI adapters will not function and are not supported. Active third-party DVI or HDMI adapters may function properly but are unsupported.

Passive adapters pass through signals from one interface to the other with minimal signal conversion. Active adapters have circuitry built into the adapter that fully convert the native DisplayPort signals to the proper DVI or HDMI interface.
