Error 800407E2: Updating Firmware in NI MAX

Issue Details

I am trying to update the firmware for my hardware using the Update Firmware button in the Settings tab of NI Measurement and Automation Explorer (NI MAX), but I am receiving the following error:

There was a problem updating the firmware for this device.

Error code: 800407E2

 

Solution

This error might occur for one of the following reasons:

1. NI MAX is opened without Windows administrative privileges. Follow the steps below to run NI MAX with administrative privileges.
   • Close NI MAX if it is already open.
   • Right-click NI MAX and select Run as administrator.
   • Select the hardware you are attempting to update and select Update Firmware.
   • Follow the on-screen steps.
2. The hard drive disk of the device is full.
   • To resolve this error, if applicable, reformat the device using NI MAX or the Command-Line of the device.
3. The firmware file (.cfg) is corrupted, so try installing other firmware file version.

Additional Information

This error can also occur if you are updating software at the same time that you are trying to update the firmware. You should update the firmware first and then update/install software.

In some cases with NI‑DAQmx 26.1, running NI Measurement & Automation Explorer (NI MAX) as administrator does not resolve firmware update issues for CompactRIO (cRIO) targets. As a workaround, updating the cRIO using a virtual machine (VM) with an earlier version of NI MAX can allow the firmware update process to proceed successfully. After the intermediate update, the target can then be updated to the latest firmware version using NI MAX 26.1.
