My USB DAQ Cable Isn't Long Enough

Updated May 3, 2018

Issue Details

The USB cable that came with my USB DAQ device isn't long enough. Where can I buy a longer cable? Will any 3rd-party USB cable of the same type work with my device?

Solution

Buying from NI:
You can buy 1 m or 2 m Hi-Speed USB cables directly from NI here.

Buying from a 3rd-Party:
If you prefer to buy from a 3rd-party, or need a cable longer than 2 m, you will need to keep in mind the following considerations:
  • All NI USB DAQ devices are compatible with USB 2.0, but it is important to note that not all USB 2.0 cables are able to transfer data at the same speeds. There are three speed classifications for USB 2.0: low-speed (1.5 Mb/s transfer rate), full-speed (12 Mb/s), and Hi-Speed (480 Mb/s). The NI USB DAQ devices use both the Hi-Speed and full-speed modes of operation. Be careful that you select a Hi-Speed cable when purchasing from a 3rd-party.
  • The USB 2.0 specification limits the length of cables to 5 m (16 ft and 5 in). If you need a cable longer than this, you will need to buy an active (repeater) extension cable, or use self-powered USB hubs to connect multiple standard extension cables together.
