NI Measurement & Automation Explorer Frozen After Clicking on Devices and Interfaces

Issue Details

National Instruments Measurement and Automation Explorer (NI MAX) freezes and says Searching and Not Responding after I click Devices and Interfaces.
An image of the behavior I am seeing is shown below. How do I fix this?

Solution

Unfortunately, a delay of up to a minute when expanding the Devices and Interfaces node on a remote system is considered normal behavior, during which NI MAX can become unresponsive. The reason for this is that the remote system has to enumerate any installed hardware via the System Configuration API in conjunction with the respective driver components that are installed. However, there are some steps you can try to prevent this behavior:

• Remove and reconnect to your network connection:

1. Remove your wired network connection
2. Reconnect your wired network connection
3. Close and reopen NI MAX
4. You should now be able to properly select "Devices and Interfaces" within NI MAX

• Reboot your system.
• Ensure that the ports listed in the Configuring Software and Hardware Firewalls to Support National Instruments Products document are open.
• Reduce the installed NI software components to the minimum required for correct operation.
• If it happens when you click on the cRIO (under Remote Systems) then follow the steps on the article NI CompactRIO or Network Device Doesn't Show Up or is Missing in MAX .
• If it happens just when you click on a specific device you can try to reset NI MAX by following the article Reset and Fix the NI Measurement & Automation Explorer Database File . You can also check if other devices that use the same driver also freeze NI MAX (for example if PXI-4070 causes this issue, check if a different DMM causes that as well). If they do, consider reinstalling the driver of the device.
