Issue Details

I cannot connect my sbRIO to my computer or PC. It shows up as detected in MAX, but there must be something else wrong because my project is giving a "failed to connect to target" error and I cannot successfully ping my sbRIO via command prompt.

Solution

  1. Connect directly via USB cable or Ethernet cable (note that the Ethernet connection should be direct and not through a router or switch.
  2. If sbRIO is not in safe mode (indicated by status light flashing three times consecutively), put into safe mode by holding reset button for 5+ seconds.
  3. Reset network settings from safe mode by pressing and holding reset button another 5+ seconds.
  4. From NI Measurement & Automation Explorer (NI MAX), run Remote Systems >> Troubleshoot Remote System Discovery wizard. This should check software compatibility and firewall settings. If your firewall settings are shown as blocking NI software, use Add Rules to correct this.
  5. Click on your sbRIO in MAX to see what IP address has been set. This is the IP address you will want to use in your LabVIEW Real-Time project.
  6. Attempt to ping the device from command prompt to double-check that a connection has been successfully established.

Additional Information

It is always recommended to install software to the sbRIO via a direct cable connection. This can be USB or Ethernet. This protects the integrity of the installation.

You can configure a static IP address for your sbRIO, but this should be done only if you know this will not interfere with how the network is configured. Follow these directions (they are written for cRIO, but the procedure is very similar).

Configure CompactRIO With a Static IP Address

If the above steps fail to work, one of the following troubleshooting steps may resolve the issue:
  • If using USB cable, try using a different USB port on PC or reseat the cable on both ends to ensure connection is good.
