PXI Chassis Slot Won't Recognize PXI Modules

Issue Details

  • One or more of the slots on my PXI(e) chassis won't recognize PXI modules. 
  • When I put PXI cards into one slot of my chassis, the card is recognized, but I don't have any options to interact with the device (Test Panels, create task).
  • PXI controller running real-time (RT) is not recognized by the host machine with modules connected but it is recognized without them.


The following steps can help isolate and troubleshoot when modules can't be read in a PXI slot:

1. Compatibility Between Slot and Card

Each slots on a PXI(e) chassis will have a designated slot type. Many of these types are only compatible with certain PXI cards. The type of slot is designated by the symbol around the slot number on the front of the chassis. Verify that the card you are using is compatible with the slot type by looking at the PXI Card Compatibility with PXIe Chassis

2. Isolate the Issue to the Slot or the Module

If a module is not being recognized by the PXI(e) chassis, we want to determine if there is a problem with the slot or the module. Follow these troubleshooting steps to isolate the problem:​
  1. Move the module that is not working to another slot of the same type on the PXI Chassis
  2. Move the module to a new PXI(e) Chassis of the same model number. Place it in the same slot number that is not working on the original chassis.
  3. Try another card of the same model number in the slot that isn't working.
  4. Switch the non-working module for a module that is already being recognized in another slot of the same type.

3. Issues With the PXI(e) Slot

If the issue can be isolated to the PXI(e) slot then try the following troubleshooting steps:
  1. Power cycle the PXI(e) chassis and any connected computer. If you are using a host computer through a MXI connection then make sure to boot up in the correct order (seen below). 
    1. Connect the PXI and the PCI MXI cards together with the supplied cable
    2. Power on the PXI chassis
    3. Power on your PC
  2. Reset the MAX Database
  3. Make sure your PXI Platform Services is up to date

4. Issues with PXI Module

If the issue is isolated to the PXI module then follow the steps out lined in Can't Find DAQ Device in Measurement & Automation Explorer (MAX).
