Cannot Detect PXI(e) Peripheral Modules in MAX

Updated Oct 4, 2023

Reported In

Software

  • Measurement & Automation Explorer (MAX)

Driver

  • PXI Platform Services

Issue Details

When I expand Devices and Interfaces in Measurement and Automation Explorer (MAX), my PXI(e) peripheral modules are not listed or detected in their slot, are not recognized or missing, or appear with a red x.

Solution

Follow the troubleshooting steps below to resolve this issue.
  1. Install PXI Platform Services. If it is already installed, make sure it is a compatible version by cross-referencing the hardware model and operating system compatibility using the following document: NI Hardware and Software Operating System Compatibility. The version installed can be identified using NI MAX. If the installed version is not compatible:
    • Power down the computer, then the PXI(e) chassis.
    • Power on the computer and install the compatible version of PXI Platform Services.
  2.  Make sure that the compatible device drivers for all peripheral modules are installed by:
    • Checking the Readme  for the peripheral module to identify what drivers are required. Confirm the peripheral module model and operating system are supported.
    • Download the device driver.
    • For third-party hardware, confirm that the driver supports NI-VISA. If the driver does not, the device will not appear in MAX.
  3. Make sure the peripheral module is inserted in a compatible slot .
  4. If your PXI(e) system uses a controller with the Phar Lap Real-Time OS, make sure you are not booting on safe mode. This OS doesn't load the drivers when it boots on safe mode, and therefore, the devices are not recognized. This configuration is on the BIOS utility of your controller. To know more about this utility and where to find this setting, please go to the user manual of your controller.
  5. If it happens after restarting the computer, try to shut down the computer instead of restarting, and start the computer.
  6. Isolate the issue to the module or slot by:
    • Testing the non-working peripheral module on another slot of the same type in the PXI(e) chassis.
    • Testing the non-working peripheral module on a new PXI(e) chassis of the same model number. Place the module In the same slot number as the original non-working slot.
    • Testing with another peripheral module of the same module number in the non-working slot.
    • Switching the non-working peripheral module for another module that is already recognized in another slot of the same type.
    • Checking the pins on the module to ensure there are no bent or broken pins.
    • If it is confirmed to be a module issue, follow the steps outlined in DAQ Device or Module Does Not Appear in LabVIEW And/Or MAX.
    • If it is confirmed to be a slot issue:
      • Power down the computer, then the PXI(e) chassis.
      • Power on the computer and reset the MAX database.
      • Test the chassis with another controller to check if the issue persists.
  7. If the issue persists after these steps, contact NI support.
