Follow the steps below to properly remove a PXI/PXIe module from a chassis.
Before you begin, power off the chassis using the system power button and disconnect it from AC power. Use proper electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection such as a grounded wrist strap. Handle the module only by the front panel or edges and avoid touching connector pins or onboard components.
- Loosen the top captive retaining screw on the module front panel by turning it counterclockwise until it is fully loose. The screw should remain attached to the module.
- Inspect the area beneath the injector/ejector handle to determine whether a bottom retaining screw is present. If a screw is installed, remove it completely before proceeding. Note that not all modules include this screw, and it may be difficult to see.
- Press the injector/ejector handle downward to disengage the module from the backplane connector. Moderate force may be required to fully actuate the handle.
- Once the handle reaches the fully open position, grasp the module by the front panel and pull it straight out of the chassis using steady, even force. Avoid twisting or rocking the module during removal to prevent damage to the connectors or card guides.
If you encounter issues during removal, ensure that no bottom retaining screw remains installed, as this can prevent module release and cause damage. Also verify that the injector/ejector handle is fully actuated before applying force.
Additional Information
- Ethernet port LEDs on PXI/PXIe controllers may remain illuminated after the chassis is powered off due to standby power. This behavior is expected and does not indicate that the system is still operating. It is safe to remove modules once the chassis is powered off and disconnected from AC power.
- To install a module, perform the above procedure in reverse order. Ensure the module is properly aligned with the card guides before insertion and fully seated using the injector/ejector handle.
- There are some cards that does not have an ejector latch. That means you remove it only by loosening its captive screws, not by pulling any tab or lever. Fortunately, NI’s general PXI(e) module–removal procedure still applies even when no latch exists.
